Been completely out of touch for about 2 1/2 weeks, at debate camp. I've been at Catholic University, and we had next to no free time to be able to surf the net or even keep up on the news. Besides for the big stuff (Cheney's f-bomb, the handover, Ken Lay, and the Senate Intelligence) I know nothing of the events of the past few weeks. It's driving me crazy.
Anyway, at camp I ran into a real-life freeper! She was actually fairly nice, although very sarcastic. I do Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and our camp resolution was privacy v. societal welfare. She was watching one of my rounds in which I was defending societal welfare, in which I had to defend COINTELPRO, J. Edgar Hoover's wiretapping of civil rights organizations. Basically, I lumped Martin Luther King in with the Weather Underground, the Black Panthers, and the Symbionese Liberation Army, and said, "I want the government watching these dangerous radicals." I felt so dirty afterwards. She came up to me after the round and said, "You could outfreep a freeper." I can't tell if that's a compliment or not.
Oh, at Reagannational on the way home I picked up the Capitol Steps' new album, Papa's Got a Brand New Baghdad. Not as good as their last one, but there's a lot of good tracks on it. "The Democratic Hit Parade" featured a lot of nice ones (Edwards' "I'm So Pretty," Clark's "Former NATO General in specific). And "I Wish I Was on Oxycontin" is classic. I also got the Delovely soundtrack. Isn't as good as I'd hoped, but still pretty good. Saw Fahrenheit 911 this afternoon, Michael Moore in top form. Incredible.
All in all, it's good to be back. Going back to work for Martin Frost tomorrow, got my boss, the volunteer coordinator, a copy of the Capitol Steps' album, figured it'd help make up for my prolonged absence.
