My family went to church this morning. My husband is Catholic. Our daughter was baptised Catholic. I am not Catholic. Anyway, my role is to tag along and try not to say anything disrespectful.
So, today when we returned to our car, which has a John Kerry sticker on it, I found the following note:
"As a Catholic Christian, please pray about your decision to support a presidential candidate who supports abortion. Thank you."
The well-meaning coward didn't sign the note, or wait around to talk to me. Well, first of all, hell will freeze over before I let that person keep me from going back to church, as was my first thought. My second thought was what I would have said to this person had he or she stuck around to discuss it with me.
John Kerry does not support abortion. He supports separation of church and state, and keeping the state out of the doctor's office. He supports funding for programs that make unintended pregnancies less likely and therefore abortions less likely. Personally, I hope that no one ever feels that their only option is abortion. Making abortion illegal is somewhat beside the point of actually preventing abortions.
The letter-writer failed to say whom she planned to vote for, but I'll assume it's the "anti-abortion candidate." So, as a Catholic Christian, how can you support a president who has sent more than 900 soldiers off to war for no good reason? The church doesn't tell me how to vote, but by the way, the Pope is not a fan of Dubya's war of choice.
It amazes me that anyone would vote based on one issue alone, but I guess some do.
