Just saw this on
CNN
Bob Edwards, who recently was removed as host of National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" after nearly a quarter-century, is leaving the network to start a new morning show for distribution on satellite radio.
I'm not sure I like what's been happening with public radio. It's kind of a mixed bag.
What I miss most is Ray Suarez who left Talk of the Nation. That was my favorite show, and Ray did such a wonderful job. The show just hasn't been the same since, not nearly as edgy or informative.
Recently here in Minnesota there has been some big changes with public radio(what we call MPR here). The mid-morning show lost Kathern Lanpher to Air America, which at first I thought was going to be a bad thing as they flirted with replacing her with Christopher Lydon(A horrible interviewer, and just totally wrong for our market here). Then they tried a few other people, and finally were able to get Kerri Miller who was a political reporter for the local NBC affiliate and has turned out to be much better than Lanpher. She's as good as Gary Eichton who does the local Midday program. (Both of them are good at interviewing local politicians, very professional. MPR was the only station that Jesse Ventura would really be candid with, because they didn't practice yellow journalism)
So it's interesting. Our local MPR is doing a pretty good job... but the national NPR is starting to piss me off.
They shouldn't have gotten rid of Bob Edwards, and I think it's a real loss now that he's leaving NPR all together.
But does anybody know any more about what he's going to be doing on satellite radio? I assume this is part of a broader programming idea.
