Ok, i've had this plan in my head for a few years so i thought i would run it by you guys to see what ya'll think. I'm proposing a national sales tax of a nickel on anything sold retail costing more than $20. Keep in mind this is a flat nickel, not 5% of the cost of the product. For example, a $20,000 car would now be sold for $20,000.05. A $50 Playstation game would now be sold for $50.05. The tax is based on the number of units of products sold, not its value. Around 16 million new cars a year are sold in this country. Millions of videogames are sold a year. We all have loose change lying around the house we hardly ever use so I don't think a nickel will hurt.
The revenues could be used to pay off the national debt. I'm sure it's not politically feasible since there are people who hate taxes of any kind. But it's just a thought.
