Yesterday I participated in a protest (my first ever!) in nearby Nassau Bay, Texas (south of Houston) at the home of Bob Perry. Perry is a building magnate in Texas and very big right wing donor, and that includes over
$200,000 to fund the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth". A good turnout, you can see some pictures
here. We even merited an
Associated Press article!
The AP article mentions the letter several vets in the group tried to deliver. Actually they did place the letter at his door and leave it, when some guy (I'm guessing a groundskeeper? We didn't check) demanded we leave the property. We returned to the street, and were annoyed to note the guy taking the letter and opening it. I doubt it will ever make it to Perry.
On the positive side, it was interesting to see that Mr. Perry isn't too popular even in his own neighborhood! When we came down the street, some residents in the homes across from Mr. Perry's gaudy mansion came out. I was afraid they'd demand we get out of their neighborhood, but they said that if Perry's people or the police (who had 2 cars on either end of the street watching us) demanded we get off the street, we were welcome to protest in their yards! I gathered Perry tore down the older house that had been at that location which was similar in design to the other homes in the area, and built up the showy monstrosity which now sticks out like a sore thumb. This and other actions of his didn't seem to sit well with the other residents.
