I've been watching today's protest march on C-Span with awe....and with some foreboding. I spoke with a good friend recently, an older man who was in the Navy during WWII, and he commented "If Bush wins, I'm afraid for what will happen in this country".
It's a little before my time, but I do read history. The divisive nature of the Vietnam era resulted in years of home grown violence (commonly referred to now as "terrorism") by groups from the Weather Underground to the SLA.
Even CNN's Bill Shneider alluded to this when he said the NY protests could go either way in public opinion. Some may see this and become even stronger for Bush. Others may see the divisive nature of Bush's presidency and conclude his presence can only lead to 4 years of internal strife and the resurgence of groups that have mayhem on their minds.
Frankly, I use my very real concern about this to talk to the (very few) fence-sitters I know. Another 4 years of Bush? Who needs Al Qaeda?
