With respect especially to the memo dated 04 May 1972 (ordering Bush to take a physical), the obvious thing for real journalists to do would be to ask Bush whether he had ever seen that document. If the document is real, Bush will want to avoid lying too baldly lest he get caught. Thus far, the White House is casting doubt on the authenticity of all the documents without committing Bush to any disprovable statements. And the press is letting them get away with it. "Mr. President, have you ever seen this document?" "Were you ordered to take a physical?" "Did anyone counsel you on not taking a physical?"
