Provincetown, Massachusetts was one of the few towns that went to court to fight Mitt Romney's bigoted revival of the 1913 law (a law originally written to stop interracial marriage, now being used to stop out-of-state gay couples from getting married in MA). While many of us think that it may not be the right time to fight this law, Provincetown is a very progressive and tolerant place and it troubles me that they are having money problems. They owe $20,000 in legal fees, and the costs are only going to go up. They will soon face dropping the lawsuit (which would embolden anti-gay hatemongers and Republicans statewide and nationwide) or dropping other town projects (which would anger the many P-Town residents who don't care about gay rights). You'd think that being a gay mecca, they would be able to raise more money from residents, but so far, they've raised a whopping $220. I guess all that Tina has gone to some of their brains. So the Board of Selectmen is going to ask gay vacationers for money again.
I know most of you don't have big money to throw around when you are already donating your resources to political fights this year. But if you know anyone in that area, or anyone who supports gay rights, who does have some money, please ask them to help out.
Andrew Sullivan goes cruising and barebacking or whatever it is he does (aside from write very creaky prose about seagulls) in P-Town several times a year. He opposes repealing the 1913 law, but that's no excuse for him to ignore the money problems of a vacation spot that he claims to love so much. Please e-mail him and politely ask him to mention this issue on his blog:

And if you live in the area, keep an eye out for the legislative primaries. Two very progressive women are trying to unseat anti-gay GOP rep Shirley Gomes, and the one who wins will certainly need your time or money, if you have any.
