I want to call swing-state voters from my home (I live in NY). I have submitted my contact info to ACT, MoveOn, Kerry/Edwards, and the DNC, but the impression I get from all of their web sites is that this particular form of volunteering doesn't really have anyone coordinating it -- all these organizations seem (sensibly) to rely a lot on local volunteer coordinators, who are (sensibly) focused on canvassing and registering voters.
So I thought, what do I need to be coordinated for? I am articulate and I know the issues inside out. Why don't I just start going through the Cleveland, Youngstown, Columbus, etc phone books and calling people?
I could ask if they know who they plan to vote for and how committed they are to their decision. If they are solid Bush or Kerry, tell them thanks and no need to waste either of our time. If they are anything short of totally committed, first explain that I am calling on my own initiative, then ask what sort of issues are important to them, with a list of sensible talking points at hand in case they just seem vague and uninformed.
Is there any reason in the world not to do this?
