More and more I think conservatives are crowding out liberals when it comes to "feelings". Show them a cowboy with a white hat, and suddenly they vote their "feelings". Judge the man by his results?! NEVER! When Rumsfeld says he'll smoke Bin Laden out of the caves, it's easy to feel he's sincere, by golly he just looks like he's gonna do it... gol durn it if you can't just tell he wants to! And when he doesn't do that, doesn't TRY that, well, it's not about results and rationality, it's about good old feelings.
Why conservatives are becoming "fairy-tale conservatives":
(1) A belief in a world of "monsters and heroes".
(2) Preference for simplicities that sound nice rather than complexities that sound difficult.
(3) A position of wishing for something to make it true. Don't say things are not going well, because that will make them not go well, it's not just superstition, it's a plea not to break the spell of the fairy-tale.
disclosure: I also posted this at tacitus to elicit any defenses/additions they might have there. For me this frames a big problem I have had with the conservatives that more and more control conservative politics. A lot of would be libertarian conservatives are naturally put off by "feelings" and irrationality which they associate with the "feel good by doing good" approach of class liberalism which they feel is unrealistically costly and thus, even if they believe in "good works", they hold that as a political philosophy it's unsustainable.
Meanwhile, they see the shiny white hat and it's all, "yup, I feel it in m'bones... these guys are the heroes..."
