Didn't see this anywhere in the English-language press but the mayor of Madrid (Spain) has made a rather strong endorsement for marriages between people of the same sex.
It's worth noting here that the majority of the people in Spain are Catholic Christians, whether that's just "culturally" or an expression of devout religious faith.

Ruiz-Gallardon Announces He Will Marry Gay Couples When It Becomes Legal
MADRID - The mayor of Madrid, Alberto-Ruiz Gallardon, said he will marry same sex couples when the law passes legalizing marriage between gays and lesbians. He pointed out that debate on the subject is primarily over "semantics" and there there is "not much difference between those who approve and those who don't".
"As mayor, I will vigorously enforce the law. And that includes the future law that will permit marriages between people of the same sex of course. In the City Halls [in Spain], the only one with the power to grant marriages is the mayor. And neither I nor any other mayor in Spain can refuse to enforce the law because that would be an act of civil disobedience," expained the Madrid mayor in a statement on Cadena Ser [television].
After mentioning that he supported the second De Facto Marriage Act that was passed in Spain, Gallardon stated that the current debate revolves around whether unions between gays and lesbians should be called "marriages" or not, saying, "nobody is talking about whether or not a union between people of the same sex will have different rights than those between different sexes".
The law that will legalize unions/marriages between gays is in the final stages of being passed and according to reports it looks like it won't be long before its enacted. The projected law also will permit homosexual couples to adopt children, benefit from pension payments [akin to the American Social Security] and inherit property.
Gay marriages with equal status as hetersexual ones are currently legal in Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands. Spain will be the second majority Catholic country to approve such a law (after Belgium).
