I e-mailed my local paper, the
SF Chronicle, recognizing my Senator's role in saying no to torture.
Dianne Feinstein isn't always as liberal a Senator as I'd like, but she and the 7 other Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee made the right choice, saying no to Gonzales and no to torture. Unfortunately, the committee's 10 Republicans signed on for Gonzalez and torture, meaning that the entire Seante will now have the chance to confirm him. Hopefully, there will be a bi-partisan consensus against torture, and President Bush will be forced to nominate someone who is explicitly anti-torture. In this post-Abu Ghriab era, when America's standing has been so degraded abroad, we can ask no less.
Let's all send out some LTEs today and let the Dems know that they did the right thing. Let's also let the Republicans know that they did the wrong thing. Finally, let's let the Senate know that they still have the chance to send a bi-partisan message that the U.S.A. does not stand for torture.
