Remember when we divided up the work on Sinclair? I think we can continue to do the same with Social Security.
We could volunteer to discount various statistics, to come up with "catch phrases" to share with Democratic leadership, and to systematically dismantle their Social Security briefing document which has been posted on Kos and Talkingpointsmemo. Is there a forum where we can do this?
I personally printed out the first 7 pages so I can "Fact check" some of them.
One thing I noticed was the chart/slide on page 6. I am sure it is somewhat spurious depending on the facts/stats used. We need a nifty chart like that, showing the $2 billion, etc debt this will shift to our children. I'm sure there are some from various Democratic type think tanks. Paul O'Neill's book would be a good source for idea points.
Also, where are they getting the poll stats on page 7? I recall seeing polls recently showing that this was NOT Americans' top concern at all. Can we locate those polls and use them?
On page 42, they reference "opponents" using the word privatizing. I think we have already seen a lot of the blogosphere and media notice that Bush and co. used that term up until recently, themselves. We shouldn't let them pin that on the social security opponents.
Also, I think we should make sure that the Republican members of Congress who have already spoken out against privatizing accounts are held accountable for what they have said. Talkingpointsmemo.com is doing a terrific job with that, obviously.
I think the document's advice to keep it simple is good.(though insulting)
No need to get bogged down in too many details.
We need to gather our key opposition points.
I consider it to be foolhardy economics--"Voodoo economics" to borrow from Bush's Sr.
Also, is there a clearinghouse for emailing Congress? I have gone to individual websites, but many do not accept mail from anyone outside their state. Has a global email point been set up by someone that we could publicize more?
fired up in Texas.
