Harriet Miers is an unwilling gift to the Democratic party.
The Republican party, by strength of their own scandals, no longer has the political will for the nuclear option. That means Democrats could have filibustered an extremist nominee with impunity. Knowing that, Bush was stuck.
Here's how I would like to see this play out: Democrats call for documents and talk about having questions answered. Both valid things that should happen. Then: endorse her! Nothing more is needed to send the far-right into a frothy frenzy attacking the nominee and Bush. If you check out the right-wing blogosphere it's already happening.
Given that the Republican party does control the White House and both houses, and that they do get to pick their Justices, we couldn't have asked for more than what we've gotten. If we can just step back and look at the larger picture here, we have a real opportunity. Going into the 2006 primaries, we can use Miers to drive a deep wedge between the right-wing zealots and the moderates.
I call it the "Let's be Rove, but not as evil, for a day" campaign!
I really believe this is a good idea and I'm trying to get it disseminated as far and wide as possible (especially in comments in the right-wing blogosphere) this morning while everybody is still forming their opinions.
