It's a Helen Keller joke! Except in this one, Ms. Keller gets the last laugh, as Alabama puts a socialist on its state quarter. Alabama's state quarter has a picture of Helen Keller, titled "Spirit of Courage".
It certainly does take courage to actively support the Socialist Party, campaigning for Eugene Debs, and fighting on behalf of the working class. She also joined the Industrial Workers of the World union to support calls to improve working conditions. It also takes courage to become a founding member of the ACLU while you are being investigated by the FBI during America's first red scare.
Keller was born in Alabama, yet I don't think she would be happy with Alabama's current political culture. She helped found the ACLU, while Alabama just passed a bill creating an electronic database of criminals, thus ensuring that some people will never finish paying their debt to society. I doubt a socialist would approve of Alabama's doubling of state troops used to arrest illegal immigrants, either.
Helen Keller's picture on the state quarter of one of the most conservative states in the union is priceless. Let's have an open political irony thread. Go!
