Has the zeal Fitzgerald and the judge in this case are showing been provoked by a routine violation of espionage laws which has had only a theoretical effect on our counter-WMD capabilities? This seems unlikely to me, since disclosure of classified information to journalists evidently is common in DC. Isn't it possible that the CIA has supplied them with tangible evidence of damage done to our national security by this leak, and that this is what is pushing Fitzgerald forward?
It is not difficult to imagine that publicizing her identity has lead to the rollup of agents previously associated with her. You could readily imagine these could have been precious assets helping us monitor the Pakistani bomb program, or Iran's, for that matter.
It seems a reasonable speculation that tangible damage to our national security is what underlies the prosecution of this case. If so, and if Bush or Cheney can be legally tied to it, we have a high crime that can terminate the Bush presidency. We may be only at the beginning of a process which will drive Bush from office.
