We all remember Trent Lott, the racist Republican Senator of Mississippi, who uttered the following during Strom Thurman's 100th birtday party on 4 DEC 2002:
"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."
Lott eventually apologized for endorsing Thurmond's retardataire pro-segregation, anti-Civil Rights platform, although it is a sentiment he has held for most of his life. Witness this statement he uttered in 1980 during a rally for Ronald Raegan in Mississippi, where Lott referred once again to Thurmond, who attended this event:
"You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."
I cite these two quotes, as they provide a bit of biographical context for the following quote, which was articulated during an interview on CNN on 27 OCT 2005 in regards to Harriet Miers's withdrawl of her nomination to the SCOTUS:
"I want the President to look around the country and find the best man, woman or minority he can find."
According to Trent Lott, minorities are neither men nor women: what he views as either their ambiguous or nonnormative sexuality makes these people inhuman.
