Check out these choice posts from this morning's reaction to the Miers pick:
RE: THE PICK [Mark Levin]
I am actually hoping there are no more vacancies during this presidency.

THE PICK [Ramesh Ponnuru]
It's an inspiring testament to the diversity of the president's cronies. Wearing heels is not an impediment to being a presidential crony in this administration! I can only assume that the president felt that his support was slipping in this important bloc, and he had to do something to shore it up.

TAKE IT BACK [Rich Lowry ]
After the Roberts pick conservatives swooned and said Bush doesn't care about "diversity"; it's only high qualifications that matter to this bold, let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may leader, etc., etc. Don't we have to take all that back now?

ON THE OTHER HAND... [John Podhoretz]
...I'm already getting e-mails from people saying she's O'Connor redux, the new Souter, etc. Which is silly. Just because she's not a conservative activist doesn't mean she's not a conservative. And those 1988 contributions could well have been "bundles" -- meaning that the collection plate was passed around at her law firm so that some leading partner could be a high-dollar-raising Dem muckety-muck and she wasn't in a position to say no.

RE: MONEY TO GORE & CO. [K-Lo, Trying]
Well, uh, I guess that helps against the cronyism charge....!

RE: PAPER TRAIL [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
And then they'll be the fight over White House counsel memos....

MIERS' POLITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS [Byron York]
From Political Moneyline, contributions made by Harriet E. Miers in the 1988 election cycle:
$1,000 to Lloyd Bentsen Re-election Committee
$1,000 to Albert Gore Jr. for President Committee
$1,000 to Democratic National Committee
WHEN BUSH SPOKE [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
I was struck by the laundry list (Meals on Wheels...). Yeah, I agree with John that he already looked ticked. But then he didn't exactly making a compelling case that she's SCOTUS material, which is what a lot of us needed! I guess we'll have to wait for the hearing.

AS HE SPEAKS... [John Podhoretz]
...it looks like the president is already angry at the criticism that this nomination is going to generate. This may be the strangest fight he's ever decided to wage, because he's entirely out on his own on this one.

THAT SAID.... [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
...I know very little about Miers and I guess I look forward to learning...(despite my first reax)

NEWSWEEK'S COVER [Kathryn Jean Lopez]
this week is on Bush and cronyism. I wonder if they would add Harriet Miers picture online. That may not be fair, but I betcha Newsweek editors are thinking that right now.
