With the nomination of Miers to the Supreme Court, and the foreseeable concern over her stand on abortion -- why is Miers not asked about her life experience with the issue and not whether she supports or opposes. For instance, we all know she will not answer a question like: 'do you support abortion rights'. But if asked a more peripheral question, not only would we likely learn more about whether she supports or opposes, but we'd also likely learn the depth of her understanding of the issue.
Asking a question like: 'Have you ever had a friend who has had an abortion, and what did you think of the experience.' - would not only tell us if she is familiar with the profound responsibility and pain that often accompanies someone's choice to have an abortion; it would also tell us if she even has any idea of how brave and painful the choice of having an abortion is. I would much rather have someone on the court making a decision on abortion who has had intimate knowledge of the powerful choice it is, which i believe most women face with a serious sense of responsibility.
Why don't they ask those sorts of questions at the confirmation?
