We spoke up, and Target heard us. But Target still refuses to support a policy mandating that valid prescriptions for birth control, including emergency contraception, be filled in-store!
In recent weeks, Planned Parenthood supporters have sent Target more than 95,000 letters urging the company to change its pharmacist refusal policy. Currently, Target pharmacists may refuse to fill any prescription, no matter how urgent the need is for the medication.
We have spoken to representatives of Target multiple times. While they say they would like to ensure that every prescription is filled, they adamantly refuse to mandate that prescriptions be filled in-store. Although Target says pharmacist refusals affect a very small percentage of their clients, it is outrageous to force even one woman to travel to another pharmacy to fill her prescription for birth control pills. Tell Target what's up.
Exact figures on Target customers were not available, but according to its Web site, Target operates more than 1,300 stores in 47 states, and there is a pharmacy in almost every Target store. Even one zealous pharmacist who refuses to fill prescriptions based on his or her personal beliefs jeopardizes the health and well-being of women.
Unlike Target, other large pharmacies like CVS and Kmart have changed their policies so that women can be certain they will be able to get their prescriptions filled in-store, without discrimination or delay. Planned Parenthood calls on the Target Corporation to change its policy TODAY. Tell Target how you feel.
