We can all rejoice and be glad now. Walmart has endorsed Jesus' birth. Perhaps your faith was shaken, but be not afraid, Walmart has not deserted you. Aren't you relieved?

In today's America some of us seem to believe Christianity is under attack. This is, in my mind, the result of politicians who realize any war, even a make-believe religious war, is profitable. Never the less, we see this mindset manifested in cries against the concept of separation of church and state and activist judges, etc.
This latest move by the Catholic League to boycott Walmart in defense of Christmas leaves a haunting, sad feeling in my heart. The last time I felt this way was the day I saw a giant crucifix being towed by a boat trailer down a street during the Schiavo travesty. I try very hard not to overstep myself and speak for God, but I can't stay quiet on this latest absurd act of righteousness.
The Prince of Peace does not need you to fight for his name to be on display with Five Pairs for $10 at your local Walmart. I wholeheartedly support boycotting Walmart for humanitarian reasons, but this group seems to not really be outraged enough over those concerns. No, instead this group prefers to publicly launch an offense to have Christmas represented at Walmart, the symbolic epitome of materialism. To think that this is a way to show reverence and ensure the sanctity of the birth of Christ is just utterly sacrilegious in my mind.
Have these organizations got no better way to show what Christmas really means? Jesus taught us the Beatitudes, might we look there? He was born in abject poverty, do we really need Walmart to recognize his message? Opportunities abound for finding the real meaning of Christmas this year. All around us there are people that need us to apply the lessons Christ taught. If ever there were a time we needed to be reminded that Christmas is not about trinkets, this is it.
