I'm the writer of gay teen novels, some of which are, um, kinda popular, including
GEOGRAPHY CLUB and its sequel,
THE ORDER OF THE POISON OAK.
Today I learned that GEOGRAPHY CLUB has officially been banned.
This isn't the first time GEOGRAPHY CLUB has been challenged. Over the years, I've heard from a number of librarians who have fended off challenges of all my books (even
THE LAST CHANCE TEXACO, which is a book of mine about kids in a group home and not gay in any way). I've also heard from librarians who confess to being so nervous about the subject matter of my books that they end up not buying them at all. But I've never heard of a successful challenge before, where the book is actually removed from the library and/or classroom (which may not be all that surprising: I can't imagine a librarian doing such a thing and then emailing the author to say, "Guess what?! I just banned your book!")
Anyway, there's more info at my new blog on gay political stuff, The Big Gay Picture
