Just when I think the level of inanity, vacuousness and tautology of right-wing rhetoric has peaked, Foxnews' Bill O'Reilly comes along to raise the bar, so to speak.
As has been documented by Media Matters, Foxnews' Bill O'Reilly is trying to distract from his troubles by railing against a straw man "liberal secular conspiracy against Christmas".
There is no need to explain to a crowd like this how absurd it is for a right-wing corporate shill to bemoan the secular aspects of Christmas. And yet, I think we should give O'Reilly the attention he craves here.
Follow me, below.
O'Reilly would have us replace the secular aspects of Christmas with religious themes. If I had a choice between the Christmas we have today and the one O'Reilly advocates, I would choose O'Reilly's.
So I say to O'Reilly and Foxnews: you are right.
It is absurd that we remember the selfless life of Jesus Christ with a secular celebration of hedonism. Christ's advice to us was unambiguous here: want not, covet not, and the meek will inherit the earth.
So, no Christmas shopping here. We will celebrate the Holiday free from material concerns.
I'm going to take action as O'Reilly suggest, and contact Macy's and other retailers who advertise on Foxnews and inform them that O'Reilly has asked us to abandon the secular celebration of Christmas. Since there is no biblical precedent whatsoever for the pagan idol "Santa Claus", the Christmas tree, or even modest gift-giving, much less profligate spending, my family will not partake in any of this.
I hope you all will join me. I'm an atheist, but I find many things remarkable about the biblical account of Christ's life. I am certain I can find much of it to relate to my two small children as we spend quiet family time at home and not at the mall.
And, of course, not watching cable television. One can't study the Bible and be watching Bill O'Reilly or Fox.
