Is Bush the perfect president for the dark forces that are trying to steal our country out from under us so they can use its resources to enrich themselves? These dark forces have been around a long time. They have been operating to a greater or lesser extent through all our presidents in recent history.
What's new is the degree of violence, extremism and disregard for the constitution or rule of law, used by their surrogates, our president and vice president. We now have a rogue president blatantly, perhaps criminally defying our laws.
The dark forces are the forces of money and power as wielded by a very small group of wealthy individuals and corporation who want simply to increase their wealth and power and will use every weapon at their disposal to disenfranchise the rights of the rest of us to further their goals.
In one sense, Bush and Cheney were the perfect tools to destroy at home whatever stands in the way of these corporate interests as well as to further their expansions and power grabs beyond our borders.
Why?
Because they have no sense of conscience where it comes to protecting our constitution or our way of life. People outside their circle are considered expendable if that furthers their goals. Every time Bush is caught ripping our constitution to shreds or lying he feels no remorse, no embarrassment like most other people feel. There is no emotional pull to say, I'm sorry, that's wrong, I shouldn't have done that. He was put in place to do that very thing and he knows it.
On the other hand, if we have any hope to stop this, perhaps Bush and Cheney were a terrible choice.
Previous presidents have allowed the general welfare to be exploited for the benefit of their patrons, (Reagan/Bush one-sided deregulation of S&L's). Even progressive Democratic presidents have allowed our resources, our army our treasury, to be used to benefit the overseas interests of these large powerful groups. The WTO and the IMF were instruments of these special interests at the expense of third world countries and operated largely outside the scrutiny of most people here at home. (see Joseph Stiglitz "Globalization and its Discontents")
Will the dark forces win and finally deprive us of our freedoms, our rights, our constitution or have these dark forces over reached with Bush and Cheney, pulling back a curtain covering ill deeds and deception that have been going on a long time? Has the blatant power grab exposed all? Will they have killed the goose that laid the golden egg? The answer will test the will of people of conscience in our congress and our courts and our institutions, and our press, and, individually, in all of us. We are fortunate to have people like Cindy Sheehan and Patrick Fitzgerald and many others. But do enough of us recognize what is happening and are enough of us willing to speak out and to vote for change and demand that our representatives and our press and our institutions respect our laws and our constitution and fairness?
We will need to support candidates who can win in 2006. We need candidates who can stand up to the Republican machine's swiftboating. We need tough, smart, people who can think on their feet and give as good as they get.

On today's Democracy Now,

guests talk about Bush's illegal evesdropping and explain why it's an impeachable offense although they don't hold much hope that this Supreme Court will see it that way.
A fellow poster, sadair, mentioned Noam Chomsky's 1993 treatise "What Uncle Sam Really Wants"

Which summarizes our foreign policy written by and for these powerful financial interests.
Now, apparently, Uncle Sam through Bush/Cheney are trying at home what their predecessors have enabled through foreign policy.
