Haven't seen this posted anywhere... according to
this Newsday story that came out late Saturday night, it appears that the Democrats might finally have a veritable challenger in place to oust seven-time incumbent congressman and chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee,
Pete King from New York. Per the story, they're looking at Nassau County Legislator
David Mejias:
Mejias, 35, who last month won a second term in a district where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2 to 1, said Saturday that he hasn't decided for sure whether to mix it up with the seven-term Seaford Republican.
"Right now, I'm considering it very seriously," said Mejias, of North Massapequa. He said he was urged to run by Reps. Gary Ackerman (D-Jamaica Estates) and Steve Israel (D-Huntington) and Suffolk County Democratic Chairman Richard Schaffer.
Mejias said he expects to make a decision "within the next four to six weeks" after weighing various factors, most notably his ability to raise the $1 million to $2 million he needs for a credible challenge.
More after the cut...
The boisterous King is a self-avowed "independent" who has traded barbs with McCain (though backed him in 2000) and voted against the Clinton impeachment, but his current existence as a partisan mouthpiece and, indeed, cheerleader for the White House may very well put him in a vulnerable situation.
Anyone from the area have a more in-depth knowledge regarding what the Democrats would face running against this guy, other than the fact that he's a long-time incumbent? Is this a race worth major focus?
Update: Using the "NY-03" tag, I do see that this has been discussed before, but not much talk exists regarding this possible challenger. How much of a chance would this guy have?
