The hilarious and frightening organization known as
Family Research Council, in partnership with other famous proponents of ignorance such as Focus on the Family and Eagle Forum, have been circulating a petition in California to put the
California Constitutional Marriage Amendment on the ballot in June 2006. Among the dozen or so hate amendments petitioning for the 2006 ballot, the FRC backs this one (summary according to the California Secretary of State):
Amends the California Constitution to provide that a marriage between a man and a woman is the only legal union that shall be valid or recognized in California. Amendment bars domestic partnerships from being valid or recognized as legal unions in California.
... and this one:
Amends the California Constitution to provide that only a man and a woman in a lawful marriage shall have the legal status of married spouses in California. Makes same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
Luckily, the reactionary right has lost this round. According to a story published in the San Francisco Chronicle, the number of signatures on the initiative will not reach the required 598,105 by the deadline of this Tuesday, Dec 27. Cited by chief hatemonger Andrew Pugno among the reasons for the shortfall was the crushing defeat of all 4 right-wing initiatives in the November special election. It seems that intolerance remains unpopular in the Golden State.
