Rep. John Conyers has sent out an
APB to all who believe in a real democracy, to help him obtain a resolution of censure against BushCo:
"I am taking steps against the Bush Administration's handling of the Iraq War and its collection of intelligence. I am going to need you to stand with me in fighting for accountability. Join me to demand censure for Bush and Cheney in addition to the creation of a Special Committee to investigate impeaching the Bush Administration for its widespread abuses of power."
This is something we've just got to do, people. The conventional wisdom is that The Repugs will never go for this. But whether or not Bush gets censured or (please, God!) impeached depends, in fact, on whether the Repugs think Americans are serious in demanding it. And censure, while not as desirable a final result as impeachment, is a possibility in my view precisely because it gives the Repugs a chance to show disapproval of King George, without having to go all the way.
In fact, censure is a first step towards impeachment. Conyers states that he has
- Introduced a resolution of censure for both President Bush and Vice-President Cheney, and;
- I am calling upon Congress to create a select committee similar to the Ervin Committee, which investigated President Nixon's Watergate crimes. This select committee should investigate those offenses which appear to rise to the level of impeachment.
In addition to his call for public support for censure, Conyers released today his congressional staff report, entitled, "The Constitution in Crisis: The Downing Street Minutes and Deception, Manipulation, Torture, Retribution and Coverups in the Iraq War." The report, in its entirety, can be found at Raw Story.com and also at CensureBush.org; additional actions can also be taken there. The report contains a chronology of the President's many deceptions on Iraq, a legal analysis, and other important aspects. I haven't read the full, 273-page report, but I'll update this diary as I do.
