It's the good kind of whoring. Steve Carter, Indiana's Attorney General (and a Repub), has alerted the media that the Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) has petitioned the FCC to allow them to contact customers even though they are registered on the Indiana Do-Not-Call list. While Federal law may permit banks to carry out telemarketing against their customers, Indiana law does not.
The AG's site
SaveDoNotCall.com has details and an attached blog. At last report, here are the banks that do business in Indiana that are CBA members:
Bank One
Fifth Third
Huntington
Integra
KeyBank
National City
PNC
Stock Yards
Union Federal
Wells Fargo
If you are a Hoosier and have an account at any of these banks, you may want to tell them that not begging off the petition might jeopardize their relationship with you.
If you are not a Hoosier, there is a chance that your state as well has offered you protections that the FCC would abrogate should it acquiesce to the CBA's demands. Either for your own peace at the dinner hour or in solidarity with fellow Americans, please feel free to send these banks a similar note.
