What does it do to a man to be accused of being something vile and having to deny, under pain of being shunned, that he is what he is?
How does a man respond to this condition? Does it make him resentful? Does it make him determined to prove that what he is is not vile?
Does he use his situation to force those, who are closest to him, to keep his true nature secret, lest they be tainted by the vileness they see in him? Does he blackmail them into letting him have whatever he wants? Does he orchestrate debacles just to test their willingness to get him out of trouble?
Is he inclined to protest too much and to bend over backwards to show the world that he has nothing in common with those who would call his vileness natural? Does he not know from his own experience that to live a secret is a vile existence?
Besides, why should others be protected from the hardships he has endured?
You see, I've been wrestling with the question why would a homosexual be a Republican?
