When my partner and I first started
Preemptive Karma, we had a lot of support from the folks at
The Centrist Coalition (their blog is known as "Centerfield"). And while I have a lot of fundamental political disagreements with the folks there, I think they've hit upon something I can get behind.
The state of California is currently working on a proposal to have nonpartisan redistricting. The nonpartisan redistricting plan is being touted heavily by groups such as Common Cause.
(more after the jump)
The Centrist Coalition believes that this sort of redistricting should take place only if states like Texas agree to sign on as part of a compromise. Nonpartisan redistricting only in states where Democrats tend to win (like California) tips the balance far in favor of the GOP.
That's certainly not the intent of Common Cause...but it's the net effect.
The Centrist Coalition is relatively new and (IMO) tends to be politically to the right. But in this case, I think they've hit upon a very important issue.
In light of what Kos posted today about Democrats considering "pulling a DeLay" and doing more partisan redistricting, it's timely to address this issue.
