The Gannon (non)story shows, once again, the weaknesses of the Dems' approach. Sending letters demanding investigations and hoping that the SCLM will pick up the scent are nice concepts, but they simply don't work in this day and age. Instead, they need to ask themselves, WWRD?
If the shoe were on the other foot, Rove would've already hired some top investigators and dug up most of the available dirt. He would've then quietly fed the dirt to Drudge, to Rush, and to Faux and then sat back and enjoyed the fruits of his nefarious handiwork. He wouldn't have sent out letters and hoped that people would start paying attention.
How much would it cost to dig up the critical dirt? There are plenty of people out there who really know what happened, and there should be enough of them who are willing to talk (especially for the right price) to get at least near the truth. There's no reason for the Dems to not engage in this effort.
Unfortunately, it's entirely possible at this point that Rove has already spent the necessary $ to shut people up. It may already be too late to follow the trail. I seriously doubt that Rove would sit idly by and risk that a story this explosive would spin out of control on him.
There are simple questions that can and should be asked. How did JG/JG support himself? He wasn't getting a salary from Talon, and DC is an expensive place to live. How many hours/day was he spending at the WH, and what was he doing the rest of the time? How often was he in and out of the WH? Was he ever there for matters other than his "journalistic" duties? What kind of access did he enjoy?
The Dems are spitting into the wind if they expect their current approach to work. WWRD is the only way to go here.
