One big weakness of Republican claims to be the "Christian" party is that most of them don't really know their Bible very well nor do they really understand the parts they do know. This is especially true in the case of abortion. In order for them to rightly claim that taking the life of an unborn child is murder, they would have to show that the Bible teaches such. But when the Bible does speak of cases where an unborn fetus is involved, the fetus is clearly treated not as a life but as a piece of very valuable property. Here's a sample (
link):
22 When people who are fighting injure a pregnant woman so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no further harm follows, the one responsible shall be fined what the woman's husband demands, paying as much as the judges determine. 23 If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
There are those who try and argue that this verse is talking not about miscarriage but about causing premature birth with the "no further harm" part referring to the subsequent health of the prematurely born child. Besides the difficulty these people have arguing against the plain meaning of the actual Hebrew text, the context shows clearly that the fine is for the lost child/property with the "no further harm" part referring to the woman whose injury led to the miscarriage.
So the Bible actually teaches that a fetus is a piece of property (agreeing with the pro-choice position) and does not consider causing the death of the fetus to be murder (against the "pro-life" position). When you add in the fact that abortions have actually increased under this latest Republican "Christian" president after decreasing during the presidency of supposed heathen Bill Clinton, Republicans don't really have much to brag about with respect to abortion. Since many of them are as ignorant about what is happening in the world around them as they are about what the Bible actually says, they do a lot of bragging anyway.
Most Republicans are also ignorant about what the Bible actually says about Sodom. You will hear them mention frequently that the "sin of Sodom" was homosexuality. According to Ezekiel 16:49, however, the sins of Sodom are something altogether different (link):
49 This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.
Pride, prosperous ease and stinginess with the poor and needy are sins most Republicans should be hesitant to talk about since those are their own shortcomings, but most of them are totally ignorant of the fact that those are the real guilt of Sodom. So they talk about the "sin of Sodom" anyway, unknowingly referring to themselves.
Even if one were to talk specifically about the sins of Sodom featured prominently in the Genesis account, there is a big difference between attempted homosexual rape (what actually occurred in the Genesis account) and the totally consensual monogamous relationships that gay rights groups are trying to get legal recognition of.
