Background info
-I am a student at the University of Colorado
-My parents $$$heavily supported$$$$ George W in the past election.
I just heard from my mother - turns out she will withhold my tuition if I defend Churchill's remarks to her.
I am concerned about the future of academia. How can we protect academia and how can we take "liberal off the dirty word list"
I have never personally had Churchill as a teacher but friends of mine who have, think the world of him. Is it fair to judge a man and threaten his job because of one essay he wrote three years ago? Certainly the language of his essay is harsh, Here it is if you want to read it. www.ratical.org/ratville/CAH/WC091201.pdf
but is the message garbage...or is there something to be learned? Churchill wrote this essay immediately after 911. I must admit I had a similar reaction to the event. No I did not think the victims of 911 deserved to be murdered, but I couldn't help but believe that the United States was in need of a reminder - people do not like to be bullied. The US had been stealing the world's lunch money - or at least locking them in their lockers for far too long. Churchill has not apologized for his words he believes in the power and need for free speech. - In interviews he has commented that the Bush administration has their eyes on academia - afterall universities represent the birth place of many
liberals. This diary is intended to stir the creative juices.
How can we protect academia and how can we take "liberal" off the dirty word list.
For those of you who do not know this.
"A revised, fleshed-out version of (Churchhill's) essay, now titled Some People Push Back, is a runner-up for the Gustavus Myers Award for Outstanding Books Advancing Human Rights."
