If I remember correctly, Richardson gave early support to Howard Dean in the primaries. Maybe not outright endorsement (maybe yes, I don't remember) but he was one of the first big wigs on Howard's bandwagon.
He was also considered as a potential VP candidate.
(Interesting tidbits: Richardson has a Mexican mother, and lived in Mexico during some of his childhood. That should help a lot.)
With Dean's imminent DNC chairmanship looming, it's interesting the timing of this (very premature) announcement.
I don't think I see right now a more compelling candidate among the Dems.
BUT, 1) it's way too early, and 2) I haven't seen enough of Richardson yet.
