I'm an odd one. I teeter back and forth between the self-ascribed labels of atheist and agnostic. That's not odd in itself, but to be an atheist who believes in the power of prayer? That raises eyebrows.
From the beginning of this non-story, an overwhelming majority of Americans have believed that the Schiavo story is not a national political issue. The religious elitists rallied under the moral leadership of Tom Delay and Bill Frist in hopes that the United States Congress could step in and save Terri Schiavo from meeting God. Unfortunately for them, every single legal outlet has been exhausted and their patient, their symbol, their talking point, is dying in the bed she has occupied since a time when Michael Jackson was known for music and dancing.
With all legal options behind you, isn't it time to put your faith to the test? Tom Delay himself said that Terri was sent to you by God. (Let's forget that he sent her fifteen years ago, and if you had your way she would have died then without the malpractice award and Medicaid that has supported her ever since.)
You, on the far right, have shown that you have an amazing ability to organize and to speak to people so effectively that you can convince them to vote consistently against their own interests. Why are you not taking this opportunity to organize and publicize a nationwide circle of prayer for Terri's life?
Like I said before, I believe there is validity to the idea of collective prayer (or meditation, if you will) having a power that has yet to be properly measured or credited by science. Wouldn't it be amazing to use this opportunity to do just that? Can you imagine the about-face the country might make if the simultaneous prayers of millions of Christians actually had an affect on Schiavo's condition? Better yet, toss in a prayer for the 35,000 persistent vegetatives in this country. What if just a handful of them started showing signs of life? Just imagine the rush to your pews.
All other options have been exhausted, and prayer is the final refuge for the dying. You have expended all of your energy in the past couple of weeks trying to isolate and ridicule liberals who disagree with your assessment of Schiavo's condition. Now is the time to turn away from the cameras, the reporters, and the politicians. Now is the time for you to put your organizational talents towards your only remaining option. You are not changing any opinions through legislation, but you can change the world with your faith. Can't you?
