"Caroline Kennedy, a lawyer, writer and the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, will present the fifth annual Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship next month in Charlottesville.
Last year, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor presented the award to Anna Gulotta of Charlottesville High School.
The Emily Couric Leadership Scholarship honors the memory of the late state senator as a political figure with a passionate commitment to public service and lifelong learning who motivated people to take on civic involvement."
Couric was my state senator until her tragic death from cancer earlier this decade. Her name helped some--she's the sister of Katie--but by all accounts was always well-respected across party lines. Also had a great sense of community involvement, in a district that ranged from liberal Charlottesville to conservative Greene and Orange County. Never seemed like your typical pol.
And her legacy is now carried on at the local level in a bipartisan fashion. As noted in the article, Justice O'Connor was the speaker last year, and was more than gracious with her time and remarks.
