I have a situation that I want your all help with. My son is in first grade at a local public charter school. While the school seems fairly progressive (it is a French immersion school) his current teacher is not.
I know she is a big Bushie, and some mentioned that she was a religious righty, but even with that I gave her the benefit of the doubt. The first sign of something wrong was when my son came home with a pamphlet for a Phil Gramm event in his backpack. He didn't know where it came from but since it could have been anyone we (my wife and I) ignored it.
Next he started asking us more questions about God and if we believed in God. We shared our beliefs and that everyone feels differently and it is a personal decision, etc, and during the conversation we got indications that this was coming from his teacher not his classmates. Then one day he told us about his teacher reading a book that talks about a squirrel that loves seeds, and his teacher stops reading and says to the class, "You know who I love class, I love God (but in French)". We couldn't quite figure out how that was relevant to anything but let it go.
Today he came home with a sealed envelope addressed `to the parents of...' and inside was a photo copy of an email sent to his teacher from the American Family Association warning her, and her us, about the We Are Family video that, God-forbid, teaches tolerance.
Yes, I think this is the Spongbob thing.
The email asks parents to do talk to the school, ask to review all materials and get them to pledge that homosexuality will not be discussed in the school, or if it is that you can be there.
Now I have no idea if our school plans on showing the Video or not...I hope they do...but I am not sure what to do about this teacher or the situation. We will not just let it sit but don't want to drag our first grader into our fight, and at the same time, we don't trust the teacher to treat him fairly once she finds out we are making waves. Even if we ask him to be transferred to another class, I don't want other kids to be subjected to her classroom lobbying.
So, if this was your kids teacher, what would you do.
