Listening to Air America, I heard David Nestor (I think, probably spelled wrong) give the best reason so far for why we should really wait and hold our filibuster card. It deals with timing...
While many of us here, including me up until today, had our hearts and minds dead set on becoming the "obstructionists" that we had all want somewhere down deep, we have to realize that unlike quite a few have said, we
don't have an unlimited number of filibusters.
I'm not talking about a sort of coin purse that we keep our filibustering tokens in, and we use them when we have to until they run out, but I'm saying there's a bully that can come along and take our tokens whenever they want. The trick here is to make sure that people see it when the bully kicks us in the nuts and grabs our filibusters. Therefore, bankruptcy is not the issue we should use, nor are any of the other, while distatrous, but nonmediated points when the Repubs go for the low-blow.
It comes down to this:
Social Security or Supreme Court picks. Both things that the media will cover, just because there is the viewership, if nothing else. That's the point when we have to spit in the Repubs eye, and then shout in time to let the camera catch him going for the gonads and running with our tokens.
Obviously, Social security would be a better choice. That, of course, is if it ever makes it to senate. We most definetly have a majority of people on our side on this one, folks. Another plus, those that are ambivalent will finally have to hear our side, as soundbites from Democtaric Senators will be played as a response to Republicans trying to explain why they are creating mob rule.
Obviously, this is just a theory, but as of right now, I think it's a better one. Much better, IMO, than the ones that say we are just taking it in the ass for the sake of the trick. Oh sorry... still in Gucky mode.
However, remember none of this applies to Lieberman, as he hasn't been a democrat for quite a while. All others, it has a good shot.
