There once was a cable station called MTV. It played cutting edge music videos all the time, at any point in the day you could turn on MTV and you would get music videos. Then an interesting thing happened. MTV started to run programs that would discuss the music videos, and then programs to discuss the fashions of the people in the music videos. Soon, MTV was creating programming that had nothing to do with the music videos, and eventually, there was no was no room for the music videos, and MTV stopped showing them in order to concentrate more on their other programming.
I think we can safely substitute CNN for MTV, and "news" for "music videos".
The parallels are just too much. MTV eventually had to spin off a second channel just to show the music videos -- a sort of "Headline News" of music videos. Eventually, even this channel began to stop showing the music videos in another death spiral of banality.
Hell, nowadays it seems like the only station consistently showing music videos is VH1 Classic. Great, is this what we have to look forward to? The only place to get news on cable TV will be a cable news channel that just shows old news?
