Lyndon Larouche scares me. He always has. He's certainly no Democrat... I'm not sure what he is.
Crazy, was what I thought he was, when I first picked up his literature in the 70s and he advocated sending prison inmates to Mars because we sure don't want them here.
Clever is what I thought he was in the 80s when he ran some folks with very white-bread names for state-wide offices in Illinois, including Lt Governor, and won... forcing the Democratic candidate for governor off the ballot for fear that it only takes one bullet to ruin someone's day.
Persistent is what I thought of him in the 90s as he continued to run for President, election in, and election out.
Crazy, Clever and Persistent should equal dangeous...
Except.
I was at the library with my most belovedest yesterday, and she went upstairs to get some books while I waited in the lobby. There was a sharp and glossy four-color magazine there with the Governator, Milton Friedman and George Schultz on the cover... and the headline was something like "Schultz's Fascist Attempt to Destroy Social Security, and How to Fight It". Something like that. Well, this is Chicago, and magazines like that spring up here and there, and I was bored, and this looked like a fun read while I was waiting.
It was a great read. Granted I only read the first 15 pages or so. The history of George Schultz's attempts to wreck the New Deal. The installation of Pinochet. The end of the gold standard. Really good stuff. And then my wife came downstairs and I closed the magazine... but with the back cover showing Lyndon Larouche's face.
All the virtual bells and whistles and alarms went off in my mind. Vrrrrp, Vrrrrrp, Aooooga, Aoooga! Warning! Warning!
This was a Larouchian rag. I couldn't believe it. It certainly read like it was a well-reseached treatise on protecting Social Security... ok, it had a lefty flair, and the bit about Ahnold supporting Hitler didn't really surprise me, because, hey, he did. But it played to people exactly like me. Lyndon played for me... and I'll tell you something, he won... because I'm actually going to finish that dang rag tonight or tomorrow or whenever and leave it on the el because I want someone else to read it... yeah. He got me.
But if there's one thing scarier than Bush holding onto office for the rest of my life and turning America fascist slowly, it's Lyndon Larouche doing it quickly.
So, I wanted to throw this out to the Kossack community and see if anyone else has run across this rag, and what gives?
Or am I destined to come to terms with the fact that I agree with a crazy, clever, persistent fellow every once in a while?
