I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Christopher early this week at my school's Young Democrats meeting. She is running for the 84th Legislative District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Granted, this is not a national election. However, I'm sure we are all aware of the fact that change comes one state at a time.
Now, I'm not entirely sure if she can win. She has various things going for her. First, she is a military wife, and being that Virginia Beach is a military area, that should play over well. The fact that she is outpacing her opponent in fundraising doesn't hurt either.
What I'm afraid of however, is the knee-jerk Republicanism in this area. I bring your attention to the November 2nd election for the vacant House of Represenatives seat. Republican Thelma Drake and Democrat David Ashe were the contender's. Even though Ashe was clearly the more passionate, more qualified, more positive, and far more honest canidiate, Drake still won with a 10% margin.
Additionally, Mrs. Christopher is of Indian descent, and I'm not sure of how that will play over in Virginia Beach.
Regardless, I think this particular election will be interesting, because if Mrs. Christopher can win in Virginia Beach then it might signal a change in public opinion in one of Virginia's largest cities.
