The Psychology Of Republican Self-Policing And Obedience
Building the Republican Tradition
- Start with an "Election Precinct" containing five Republicans. In the precinct, put a "Vote Democratic" ballot in one area of the precinct. Before long, an independent minded Republican, will go to the area and make an attempt to "Vote Democratic".
- As soon as he touches the ballot, spray all of the Republicans with cold water. After a while, another independent minded Republican makes an attempt with the same result - all the Republicans are sprayed with cold water.
- Turn off the cold water. If, later, another Republican tries to "Vote Democratic", the other Republicans will try to prevent it even though no water sprays them.
- Now, remove one Republican from the Election Precinct and replace it with a new one. The New Republican, being independent minded also, sees the "Vote Democratic"" ballot and wants to "Vote Democratic". To his horror, all of the other Republicans attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to "Vote Democratic", he will be assaulted.
- Next, remove another of the original five Republicans and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the "Vote Democratic" ballot and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm.
- Again, replace a third original Republican with a new one. The new one makes it to the "Vote Democratic" ballot and is attacked as well. Two of the four Republicans that beat him have no idea why they were not permitted to "Vote Democratic", or why they are participating in the beating of the newest Republican.
- After replacing the fourth and fifth original Republicans, all the Republicans which have been sprayed with cold water have been replaced.
Nevertheless, no Republican ever again approaches the "Vote Democratic" Ballot. Why not?
"Because that's the way it's always been done around here!"
