To make the calculation, I assigned point values for each comment's ratings -- 2 for Excellent, 1 for Good, 0 for Marginal, -2 for Troll, and -3 for Super Troll. Then I added the values and ranked the comments.
"Tip jar" comments were excluded, since well-received diaries are recognized through the Recommended Diaries mechanism.
I excluded "tip jar" comments by excluding all comments people made to their own diaries. This may have excluded other well-rated comments people made to their own diaries. But in such cases, diarists can edit their diaries to include the content of their well-received comments, and hope for recognition in the Recommended Diaries.
Also, I excluded Cheers and Jeers, because that thing is just an insane mojo rave.
Comments also had to have a least 7 ratings to qualify, and be attached to a diary or main page story posted on May 16, Pacific time.
