There has been one DKos meeting (East Bay) that has been canceled because the folks don't think that Meetup.com is worth $20/month (maybe $20/year, but almost 5x more than NY Times editorials??).
I think that it's pretty clear that meetup.com has jumped the shark as an organizing tool.
One of its strengths was as a test. You would talk to people on line, and then you would set up a meetup, and if you got the requisite number, then you were viable.
Well, with the charges, I have to believe that meetup.com, along with the contact information in their database, will go away.
I don't mean become irrelevant, I mean go away.
With free alternatives of with a bit lower utility, like Yahoo Groups' calendar, I can't see anyone staying any longer than they have to.
Basically, once you think you have all the active contacts that once were in your meetup, you'll drop it.
This diary is to create a list of inexpensive/free alternatives to Meetup.com.
So, what are folks using and/or talking about using?
