Just who are these people with an extremist agenda and how large is this group?
Evidently not as large as even they think and nowhere near large enough to change anything nationwide on their own. If you want to just do a quick eyeball count, this group isn't enough to keep a television series on the air.
CBS today cancelled "Joan of Arcadia" after its 2nd season because of low ratings. This series premiered to critical and audience acclaim when it debuted 18 months ago and its ratings have plummeted. Now CBS it cutting it's losses. This show was the youth-appeal follow-up to "Touched By An Angel" which lasted several times longer.
On top of this the NBC End-of-Days themed mini-series "Revelations" is a similar dud, not winning it's time slot and diminishing weekly in audience.
If these people aren't even sizable enough to keep the only religious themed programs in prime time on the air they aren't nearly as important and influential as the media who kowtows to them thinks. Where are the advertisers fighting for this programming? Nowhere obviously because these shows do not have the demographic they crave, the 18-49 group.
Slightly off topic last night at the Academy of Country Music Awards, the big winner was a young upstart Gretchen Wilson. She won Best New Artist and Best Female vocalist. In her hit song called "Here for the Party", she sings:
Well I'm an eight ball shooting double fisted drinking son of a gun
I wear My jeans a little tight
Just to watch the little boys come undone
Im here for the beer and the ball busting band
Gonna get a little crazy just because I can
You know im here for the party
And i aint leavin til they throw me out
Gonna have a little fun gonna get me some
You know im here, im here for the party
This isn't the music we'd guess teenagers sing on the way to the Baptist Church and yet this is exactly what they are warbling. By the way, Wilson's previous hit was "Redneck Woman", and here's a few lyrics:
Well, you might think I'm trashy, a little too hardcore
But in my neck of the woods I'm just the girl next door
Maybe it's time to realize these fundies only have power when joined in an Unholy Alliance with the corporations and uber-wealthy of this coutnry who only want to raid the tax code and bend the operating rules so they can get even wealthier while strip mining the Constitution to discriminate against gays and dishonoring the Founding Fathers by gutting centuries old Senate rules.
