I read an interesting essay today..it was written by a college professor back in 1984 and remains even more relevant in 2005.
His entire essay pointed to the fact that America was becoming a nation of electronic addicts (TV in particular) and we had come to value image over substance. This he felt would eventually be our downfall, the dumbing of our culture.
In the year 2005, that is exactly where we are at. We are more concerned with the results of AMERICAN IDOL than we are with the growing number of casualties in Iraq. We prefer getting snippets of news from CNN than actually sitting down and reading the NY TIMES story with a detailed account of the facts. We worry about the runaway bride but don't care about the neighbor next door.
I feel a sadness for what America was and what America can be. Can we just for one day, one week, one month or for the commited ones, one year give up our MTV, VH1, FOX, CNN, MNSNBC, and just BE and try to engage the world around us?
