Our homegrown versions of Baghdad Bob, Dick Cheney and his sidekick, George W., continue to assert that all is well in Gitmo: "The fact of the matter is, we're engaged in a conflict that's been described as the war on terror," he said. "It is unlike any conflict we've ever known before, but as a by-product, if you will, of that activity, we have from time to time captured individuals ... who are doing their level best to launch attacks against Americans either on the battlefield or in the United States."
I am especially worried about the 70 year olds that I have read that they are holding.
More absurdity below:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday he doesn't believe revelations about the treatment of prisoners at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay have become an image problem for the United States and that the facility should not be shut down.
"Those who most urgently advocate that we shut down Guantanamo probably don't agree with our policy anyway," the vice president said after presenting the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards at the National Press Club.
Given all the facts, he said, "Our policy is the correct one."
I think this is what bothers me the most - in what possible universe is this man living where he doesn't believe that the revelation of torture at Gitmo is NOT an image problem for the United States. I mean, argue the immoral policy, which he does, but to deny that this is a problem for us in the eyes of the world, a world in which we have instant communication via the internet, is astounding. To whom is he addressing this drivel? Who is he trying to convince with this nonsense??
And another false assertion: that those who disagree with what has been done in Gitmo probably would not agree with their policy anyway. But republicans have started speaking out against the base, and calling for its closure too, so he is lying there again. With impunity.
And in my view, this is all BS anyway: Guantanamo is simply a symptom of insecure little tyrants run amuk, not the sickness. The sickness is the tyrants.
