Feinstein backing "Flag Protection Act"

Here's the latest tooth-grinding morning read: Vote on flag desecration may be 'cliffhanger'.  What really caught my eye was the paragraph:

They [the Repugs] will be joined by at least five Democrats who have co-sponsored the [flag protection] resolution, including Dianne Feinstein of California and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Both are up for re-election next year.

This isn't just a meaningless bill -- this is an amendment to the Constitution!

After removing a layer of tooth enamel, I blasted off a quick letter to DiFi.  My objections were (roughly):

1. Free speech is precious -- don't mess with it.
   
2. The Constitution is where you enshrine your most hallowed principles, not jingoistic prohibitions.  Such a frivolous amendment would certainly please the Repugs -- it would lower the bar for socially repressive tinkering with our Bill of Rights.
   
3. Work on something important, or did you run out of pressing issues for Californians? (If so, maybe we need a more insightful senator...)
   
4. U.S. flag populations are up, not down -- it's hardly an endangered species!

My plea to all DKos'ers:  write to Dianne Feinstein, Ben Nelson, and whoever you can.  Protest this high-profile abomination!
