Here's the latest tooth-grinding morning read:
Vote on flag desecration may be 'cliffhanger'. What really caught my eye was the paragraph:
They [the Repugs] will be joined by at least five Democrats who have co-sponsored the [flag protection] resolution, including Dianne Feinstein of California and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. Both are up for re-election next year.
This isn't just a meaningless bill -- this is an amendment to the Constitution!
After removing a layer of tooth enamel, I blasted off a quick letter to DiFi. My objections were (roughly):
- Free speech is precious -- don't mess with it.
- The Constitution is where you enshrine your most hallowed principles, not jingoistic prohibitions. Such a frivolous amendment would certainly please the Repugs -- it would lower the bar for socially repressive tinkering with our Bill of Rights.
- Work on something important, or did you run out of pressing issues for Californians? (If so, maybe we need a more insightful senator...)
- U.S. flag populations are up, not down -- it's hardly an endangered species!
My plea to all DKos'ers: write to
Dianne Feinstein,
Ben Nelson, and whoever you can. Protest this high-profile abomination!
