I was out for my Sunday errands today when I found myself driving to a clothing store I hadn't planned to visit. But something told me I needed to go in there, so I did.
I found some bargain prices on clothes, so that was all good. But the most interesting thing happened when I went to the checkout counter, and I didn't realize the potential impact until I was driving home.
I was wearing a Macromedia t-shirt, and the cashier asked me how I got it. I said I'd purchased it at last year's Macromedia MAX conference. We chatted for a bit about web design and computer programs and she said she was really into video production.
Then she said the coolest thing: she's currently working on a project for The Congressional Black Caucus and she could really use my help!!!
more below the fold...
Of course I said I was interested in helping! I asked if she got to work with Elijah Cummings and she said yes. Oddly, due to Congressional boundaries, he is my Congressman but not hers (even though we live in the same town). But anyway, she went on to say they are having some sort of "boot camp" program starting July 18th and she wants me to attend at least one day as her guest. I will see if I can sneak out of work for a day to go.
We talked about opening eyes and educating people. She said that all it takes is showing some people the stories of what others have endured, like going to the Blacks in Wax museum in Baltimore and seeing the lynching exhibit. She likes to inspire people to act. I have to respect that. I wish I were good at inspiring people--that's what I'd truly like to do.
I hyped DailyKos and told her she is needed around here for YearlyKos and potential other activities. I told her how we are all fired up now after being spit on by Rove and the WH. I gave her the URL and my username so hopefully she'll join up and be one of us.
We exchanged info, and now that it's sunk in how I've met someone who I can join forces with to get out the message and inspire and influence people politically, I have a feeling we'll become good friends and great working partners.
