One of the richest families in Michigan will be sending Dick DeVos into the ring to run against Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Dick DeVos will run for governor in '06 race
It will be anything but pretty:
Michigan Democratic Party chairman Mark Brewer criticized Thursday's announcement. "With the Michigan economy needing help, Dick DeVos is wrong for the job because his idea of economic development is creating jobs in China," Brewer said in a written statement.
Ha ha! Good one Mark!
But in all seriousness, Michigan is trending Red. The ultra conservative Grand Rapids money is far and away becoming more powerful than Lansing and Detroit. You may recall Dick's wife Betsy is the immediate past chair of the Michigan GOP. You may also recall that the DeVos fortune was made by Amway. Now I'm all for self made people, but multi level marketing is too close to pyramid schemes for my tastes:
Some people confuse pyramid and Ponzi schemes with legitimate multilevel marketing. Multilevel marketing programs are known as MLM's,(4) and unlike pyramid or Ponzi schemes, MLM's have a real product to sell. More importantly, MLM's actually sell their product to members of the general public, without requiring these consumers to pay anything extra or to join the MLM system. MLM's may pay commissions to a long string of distributors, but these commission are paid for real retail sales, not for new recruits.
It sounds like a special definition invented simply to distance the practice from pyramid schemes.
And what's with the name change? Amway to Alticor? Who am I to judge, but check this out. Probably not a DeVos supporter.
Why the fuss? DeVos is worth 1.7 BILLION DOLLARS. That's a lot of soap.
And DeVos and Amway are certainly conservative, even to the kool aid crowd.
"They tell you to always vote conservative no matter what. They say liberals support the homosexuals and let women get out of their place," says Karen Jones, a former distributor in Myrick's hometown of Charlotte, N.C. "They say we need to get things back to the way it's supposed to be."
So stayed tuned, and let's keep Michigan Blue!
